Zara Phillips and her crazy hats
The London 2012 Olympics Opening ceremony on Friday was enough to make even the most unpatriotic of us belt out the national anthem with a cup of tea in one hand and a Union Jack in the other. In short, it was a proud day for us all.
London 2012 is finally here!
Now the games have begun, and the world's best athletes are competing in a global sporting contest that is as historic as it is exciting. We are all rooting for British athletes. Whether watching them on TV or at the stadium, we are on the edge of our seats with a raised pulse and sweat pouring down our faces.
A royal athlete
Zara Phillips is one of our country's best and most famous athletes because of her royal connections. She is as well known for her equestrian pursuits as she is for her love of hats. Kate Middleton loves her fascinators and Zara loves her hats.
The Queen's granddaughter, like many of our royals, does like fascinators, too. But Zara is adventurous with her choice of hats and uses them to spruce up block-colour outfits. From her wild fascinators adorned with feathers and bold flowers to her big eccentric hats with leopard print and vibrant colours to her boyish caps, top hats and berets, Zara definitely has a unique style.
New Olympic dreams
Zara forged a successful career as an athlete but was unable to compete in the last two Olympic Games (in 2004 and 2008) because her beloved horse, Toytown, suffered injuries.
Since then, her faithful steed has retired but not before helping her snag several gold medals.
The sprightly royal is now hoping for Olympic success on her home turf with her new horse High Kingdom. She made her debut on 29 July, achieving an impressive score of 46.10 in the dressage.
"It was incredible to be selected," she told the Guardian Newspaper, "and to be here at home for the Olympics is an amazing feeling."
Olympic success!
Zara won the silver medal after finishing second in the Team Eventing on the fourth day of the 2012 Olympics in London. Congratulations to both Zara andof course the gorgeous High Kingdom!
Sporty outfits
Zara, like her parents, has always been sporty. We will no doubt see more of her sporty outfits and crazy hats over the course of the Olympics.
Even Kate showed her sporty side last week while rocking a Union Jack adorned polo shirt and putting the boys to shame at table tennis.
The royal girls are showing the fellas how the games are won!
