What SPF should I choose for my skin?
Follow our beauty advice to stay protected from the sun as you head off for sunnier shores this summer. Make sure you take all the precautions to get that gorgeous golden tan so sensual.
Everybody's different
Before picking out the best SPF, remember that when it comes to our skin, not everyone is the same. We don't all react to the sun in the same way. Some people's skin tans more easily than others. Some people seems to have skin that is not affected by the sun while others' skin burns very quickly.
To a degree, this is linked to your skin tone... but not always! Even if you are very dark, you can both tan and burn!
Exposure
Other factors, such as level of exposure, should also be considered when choosing a SPF. It might sound silly, but remember that the level of protection from the sun that you need will not be the same if you are heading out for a jog in London, heading to a seaside, heading to Spain for a long weekend or heading to the mountains.
Wherever you're headed, stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm. These are the most hazardous hours of the day, sun-wise!
Our recommendations
Each case is different but, in general...
-If you have sensitive, fair and very fair skin: opt for factor 30 or 50.
-If you have olive skin or dark skin: you can usually go between factor 15 and 30.
In all cases, apply regularly!
Oil, lotion, cream or gel? Take your pick.
Though do be careful... make sure to buy a sun cream for your face and another for the rest of your body. And don't forget the all-important after-sun balm, which will help to mosturise and repair you skin after a heavy dose of sun.
Happy holidays!
