From the New York Fashion Week to Your Wardrobe
So, New York has been THE fashion capital of the world this week, what with the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week rocking the big apple and all.
The models that strut down the runway can look remarkably elegant, shockingly cutting-edge or downright scary. And most of the time, we look at them and think "That's nice" or "That's freaking weird" or "Ewww," return back to work and leave fashion to the slightly wonky fashionistas who rule the world of runways.
But we are here to help you do more than that. We want to show all of you that you can be inspired by these fashion parades and, what's more, you can make the looks your own.
So, for the third feature in our series, we're gonna translate catwalk trends at the NYMBFW. Translation No. 1: All those letters mean New York Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
Trend No. 1 - No end to summer in sight
The biggest thing we've noticed in New York is that designers seem to be having a hard time saying goodbye to summer. We're shivering just THINKING about New York winters, so we don't blame 'em.
In any case, a lot of summer 2012 trends are carrying over. As in, this year, it seems to be ok to wear WHITE after Labour Day. We also saw no stop to the NEON, the BRIGHT COLOURS, the CROP-TOPS and the LACE: all decisively summer styles. Except for this year. So, instead of putting away your lacey tank tops and your neon knickers, pair 'em with a jumper and you're good to go!
Trend No. 2 - leather
It's classic, what can we say? Leather jackets are hot, but so are skirts and dresses and purses (ok, so the last one is sort of a given.) Time to treat yourself to a leather jacket (just do it-- they'll last for years.) But why not be a bit daring and try a leather mini-skirt? Pairing it with a jumper makes it into a no-fuss style.
Trend No. 3 - ballerina buns
High buns have been reaching new heights of popularity during MBFW in New York. This simple-as-can-be style is God's gift to late risers... or those who would rather avoid showers (are you a poverty-ridden student stuck with cold showers? THIS is your style).
Trend No. 4 - Peek-a-boo
It may be getting a bit chillier... but looks like the stars are going to keep the sheer trend going with both transparent fabrics and lace.
Lace was big this summer, huge in Venice and it looks like this romantic style is here to stay. All the better. Who doesn't love a love story with a snowy back drop?
Trend No. 5 - funky lip colours
Don't be afraid of bright make-up! We're telling you... one swipe of fun-coloured lipstick can change a drab look to a fashion statement! In fact, the more plain an outfit, the better a bit of bright lipstick works. If you are a bit scared by yellow, try a bright red, a fuschia or a super dark red that borders on purple.
Trend No. 6 - pointy shoes
Get your severest school marm going for the back to school season. That's right. Pointy shoes are all over the place. Perfect for showing who's boss. A style for ladies who rock the pants.
In conclusion
See, it isn't that hard to get inspiration from that oh-too-crazy-for-me catwalk fashion. And the best part is yet to come. When your co-worker comments on your racy lace or your best friend's man says he likes your bun ("I meant the hairstyle, I promise!"), you can smile and say sweetly...
"Oh, thanks. I saw it at the New York Fashion Week."
