Beauty blog: Brenna conquers the fishtail braid
You know that Boy, the gorgeous one, who you are totally crushing on. You see him around, you always notice him. You think about him. You wish you were a little more daring, that you'd just say hi, try it... you have nothing to lose, after all.
But, darn it. He is just so effortlessly cool.
In essence, that was my story with the fishtail braid. I had a major crush on that hairstyle. I'd see it on fashionistas all over town and it always seemed too complicated for someone with my skill set.
But I'd admire it from afar. I'd think how cool it was. How cool and how utterly beyond my reach.
Just like with the Boy, I made a few half-hearted attempts to make contact with the Braid. I looked up online tutorials once or twice and added "Learn to Fishtail Braid" to my to-do list. Mostly, just wore my friends out talking about it.
Then one day... I met up with my friend Lily and noticed something.
No way.
Her perfectly executed fishtail braid was staring me in the face.
I kind of felt that feeling you get when your best friend starts dating the Boy. Or at least talks to him.
"Is... is that a fishtail?" I stuttered.
"Yeah!" she said, "It's super easy.
"
The words rang in my ears.
A few days later, a day no more remarkable than any other, in fact, I decided that I couldn't wait any longer. It was now or never. I'd either learn or die trying.
This sudden conviction arrived swiftly and suddenly in the midst of an afternoon at work. All the better, because I had my ever-ready colleagues to practice on.
After having researched on several tutorials, I got to work on Kathy's hair. To my utter surprise, the side fishtail braid worked! I did my second braid on Marie and it came out even better than the first. I was over the moon. The elusive hairstyle was mine.
Drunk on success, I decided to try a romantic braided updo on Kathy.
Um. So. We'll call it a work in progress. It was a fumbling step at romance but hey, at least I tried. And next time it'll be better.
